One-to-one Class 9 tuition, the first year of the board syllabus

Class 9 is the first half of the two-year course that ends in the Class 10 board exam. A matched teacher helps your child build the base for it, chapter by chapter, with term exams for maths and science included.

  • Number systems, polynomials and coordinate geometry taught for understanding
  • Motion, force, atoms and the cell, the base of Class 10 science
  • Term exams for CBSE Class 9 maths and science, at no extra cost
  • About 310 Class 9 students have learned with Qlive

The year the board syllabus starts

CBSE runs Classes 9 and 10 as one secondary course. The board exam is at the end of Class 10, but many of its chapters continue directly from Class 9: polynomials in maths, motion and force feeding into later physics, and the structure of the atom underneath Class 10 chemistry. That is why we tell families that Class 10 preparation really starts in Class 9.

About 310 Class 9 students have learned with Qlive, the second largest class after Class 10. The common story is a student who did well in Class 8 and is surprised by how much more Class 9 asks.

What Class 9 covers in CBSE

NCERT is revising its books class by class, so check the edition your child’s school uses. The main areas of the Class 9 syllabus are:

  • Maths. Number systems, including irrational numbers; polynomials and the factor theorem; coordinate geometry; linear equations in two variables; Euclid’s geometry, lines and angles, triangles, quadrilaterals and circles; Heron’s formula; surface areas and volumes; and statistics.
  • Science. Matter and its states, pure substances and mixtures, atoms and molecules, and the structure of the atom; the cell as the basic unit of life and tissues; motion, force and Newton’s laws, gravitation, work and energy, and sound; and improvement in food resources.
  • English, social science and languages. Literature and writing tasks, history, geography, political science and economics, and a second language.

ICSE Class 9 begins the two-year ICSE course, and state board students start the run-up to their own Class 10 exams, such as the SSLC in Kerala. For British schools, Class 9 lines up roughly with Year 10, the first year of GCSE.

Where Class 9 students usually struggle

  • Proofs in geometry. Writing a congruence proof with a reason for every line, which is new for most students.
  • Irrational numbers and surds. Rationalising a denominator and using the laws of exponents with real numbers.
  • Motion. Reading distance-time and velocity-time graphs, and choosing the right equation of motion for a numerical.
  • Atoms and valency. Writing chemical formulae correctly, which every later chemistry chapter relies on.
  • Biology diagrams. Drawing and labelling a cell or tissue the way the exam expects.

How one-to-one classes work in Class 9

Classes are usually 60 minutes, live on Google Meet, with the learning in Qlive Space. For a geometry proof, your child writes the steps and the teacher checks the reason for each one. For motion, they sketch graphs on screen and work numericals together. Diagram labelling activities in Qlive Space suit the cell, tissues and atomic structure, and PenQ, the AI helper, can draw a diagram or explain a step again between classes.

Our guides on Newton’s three laws and plant and animal cells cover two chapters many students find tricky.

Worksheets come through Qlive Pulse, a checkpoint every two to three weeks tests recent chapters, and for CBSE Class 9 maths and science, term exams built from the chapters already covered are included at no extra cost. Written answers are photographed and marked with comments, so your child learns how answers are marked well before the board year.

Signs your child needs help in Class 9

A sharp drop in maths or science marks in the first term, answers that are right but lose marks for missing steps, or a child who can follow the teacher but cannot start a question alone. Gaps from Class 7 and 8 algebra often appear here inside polynomials and linear equations, and are quicker to fix now than in Class 10.

Class 9: questions parents ask

Does Class 9 count towards the board exam?

The CBSE board exam is at the end of Class 10, and Class 9 is examined by the school. But Class 10 builds directly on Class 9 chapters, such as polynomials, motion and the structure of the atom, so a weak Class 9 makes the board year much harder.

Why does my child find Class 9 maths so different?

Class 9 asks for proofs and reasons, not just answers. Number systems brings irrational numbers, and geometry asks students to prove that triangles are congruent. Students who learned maths as methods to follow often find this the hardest change.

What are the term exams?

For CBSE Class 9 maths and science, Qlive includes term exams built from the chapters your child has already covered, at no extra cost. They give practice in a full paper before the board year.

Can classes follow my child's school order of chapters?

Yes. The teacher follows the school's order where possible, so each class supports what is being taught that week.

Do you teach ICSE and IGCSE students in this year as well?

Yes. ICSE Class 9 starts the two-year ICSE course, and IGCSE courses often start around the same age. Tell us the board and subjects and we match a teacher who teaches them.
